Young widow & widower dating

Young widow dating: finding people who understand

Losing your partner young can feel lonely in a particular way: friends your age are mostly planning weddings and babies. Widowed Mingle is a community centred on widowed singles, so you don’t have to explain yourself first.

Free to join. Paid memberships are optional, and prices are all in one place.

The younger widowed

Nobody your age knows quite what to say

Being widowed before middle age brings its own pressures. Perhaps there are young children, or a mortgage, or friends who vanished because they didn’t know what to say. You might feel too young to be a widow and too grief-stricken to be “back out there”.

A search for “young widow dating” often comes from a very quiet place. We just want you to know that wanting company again doesn’t betray the person you lost, and that wanting to wait is fine as well.

Dating as a young widow is also, simply, dating: coffee, walks, long chats. There’s space here for the sad bits and the funny ones.

A note on “young”.

Widowed Mingle is for adults only: members must be at least 18 (21 in some US states). “Young” here means younger than most people who lose a partner, and you set the age range you’re open to.

What can feel different

Four things that can feel different for younger widowed people

These are general observations, not statistics. They’ll be true for some people and not for others.

Family and children

If you have children, you decide when, or whether, to mention a new person to them. There’s no timetable. Our guide on when to start dating again covers that conversation.

Mixed feelings

Excitement, guilt and sadness can arrive in the same afternoon. That’s normal, and it doesn’t mean you’re moving too fast or too slowly.

Feeling out of step

Dating sites are built for people who haven’t been through what you have. Here, your story isn’t a red flag.

Privacy

Your real name is never shown publicly, other members see only your nearest town or city, and you control which details and photos you share.

Starting small

You can begin with friendship, or with nothing at all

Looking costs nothing. You can join free, browse, and read other profiles without sending a single message. If you’d rather make friends first, our widow friendship page explains how that works here.

Prefer to read first? Free widow dating spells out exactly what’s included, and safety covers what to look out for.

If grief is feeling overwhelming, it’s OK to talk to your GP, a counsellor or a bereavement support service as well. Dating can sit alongside that, but it isn’t a replacement.

Questions from younger widowed people

Is Widowed Mingle for younger people too?

Yes. It’s a community centred on widowed singles and members choose the age range they’re open to. Plenty of our pages talk about dating over 50, but that’s not the whole picture.

What if I’m not sure I’m ready?

Then take your time. You can join free and just look. Our guide on when to start dating again may help.

Do I need to tell people I have children?

That’s your decision. Some members mention children on their profile, and others wait until they know someone better.

Is it free?

Joining is free. VIP and VIP Plus are optional extras, and every price is listed on the prices page.

Is it for young widowers too?

Yes. There’s more advice for men on our widower dating page.

Looking is free, and so is stopping.

Make a profile, see who’s around, and move at the pace that feels right.
